Expert Biography

Sajda Mughal is a multi-award winning campaigner and countering-extremism expert. She is the CEO of JAN Trust, a leading BAME women’s charity. Sajda knows first-hand the affects terrorism can have; she narrowly escaped serious injury and death during the London terrorist attack on 7th July 2005 where she was on the same Piccadilly tube as the bomber Germaine Lindsay. Since then, she became determined to work within her community in order to strengthen the role that women and young people play in building a stronger, safer society. Over a decade ago, Sajda developed the pioneering award-winning Web Guardians™ programme working with families to protect their children and loved ones from online extremism and gangs. She also developed the ‘Charity Awards’ winning (2019) Another Way Forward programme working with young women to fight hate and racism. Since 2018, Sajda has provided unique insight and expertise as a Specialist Adviser on Countering Violent Extremism to the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. In addition to this, she advises schools and public/private sector partners. She is also a Member of the Victims Panel for the Ministry of Justice. Sajda is also an expert advisor to Internet Matters and a member of the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS). She co-founded the Survivors Against Terror Network. Her activism and work with BAME communities in countering extremism has received national and international recognition and she has been profiled in The Telegraph, Red Magazine and Cosmopolitan magazine. Sajda is a contributor to various new outlets, including The Independent, The Guardian, The Times, HuffPost, and The Metro. She has appeared on several television programmes, including Lorraine, Victoria Derbyshire, and Inside Out. Sajda has received numerous awards and recognition for her work and in 2015 she was awarded an OBE for her services and work towards community cohesion.  In 2018, she was awarded ‘Campaigner of the Year’ from the European Diversity Awards for her work in countering terrorism.
