Children and the lost art of writing

I’m the eldest of six children, with two grown up children of my own and a three-month old granddaughter – all of whom have been my inspiration and strength on this journey.

I knew from an early age I wanted to make an impact on a child’s learning to write after I saw the struggles of my siblings and my own children who simply didn’t enjoy writing.

Working in a corporate environment then being part of a children’s stationary brand helped me to have the focus and knowledge to set up my own business.

As a single mum, I had very little spare cash and was always looking for ways to help my children in their educational journey. They both struggled to learn to write – my son especially – but I just couldn’t see anything out there that could actually help them to enjoy writing. Writing is such a fundamental block of education and I couldn’t understand why we make it so hard for children to engage with it. We don’t give a four year-old an adult size bike to learn on so why give them adult size pencils or books? It didn’t make sense.

There’s also the fact that we’re now living in the digital era which means children are losing the art of learning to write even more.  So Love Writing Co. was born out of a personal need.

‘Children at primary schools were the worst affected by the lost learning time after the lockdowns, with those aged six and seven most likely to fall behind in maths and writing.’

The pandemic hasn’t helped at all. The Guardian reported that children at primary schools were the worst affected by the lost learning time after the lockdowns, with those aged six and seven most likely to fall behind in maths and writing with only 54% of children working at their expected levels.

Schools need support to enable children to catch up on the missed literacy time.

Learning to write is one of the fundamental building blocks of a child’s development and it is the foundation on which children build all their future knowledge and understanding. Learning to write also provides the best brain workout children can get. It requires all the skills of reading, small motor coordination and even emotional intelligence.

Very often, good writers make good readers and spellers, so our mission at The Love Writing Company is to get kids writing and to love it too.

Our products have been developed to provide age-appropriate writing products as well as fun activity books for children. Our range has been developed to fit a child’s hands and they have to be the correct diameter, length and quality needed to create balance and a comfortable grip.

We want to support children from all backgrounds and make their learning-to-write journey easier, quicker and fun.
